Containment

An original sculpture I've made in an effort to make something with a little more 'motion' and weight to it. A criticism I'd have of some of my past figures is sometimes they're just standing there, or they look like you've walked in on them during a private meeting. Sometimes it's nice to try something a little more energetic - you know?

The monster was sculpted in monster clay, the robot was made from styrene... and a ping pong ball.

The blocking phases. Also known as 'this looks crap' phase

I'd had an idea for a big weighty monster stamping a robot through the ground like he'd escaped or something (insert narrative here). It's more of an idea for a diorama than anything.

I guessed he'd be escaping from a lab or something and maybe he's a half finished monster. So, hey wouldn't it be cool to have a big fusion reactor sticking out of his back?

Made of tubes and things like that?

I was making this up as I went along - so it was quite difficult to know when he was finished.

His arms are removeable for easy molding, I did the standard brush on technique for this with a plaster mothermold.

Robot

The robot I'd imagined as some sort of medical droid - a big boxy type.

I thought it would be funny to give him big blue rubber gloves - see that in the painted version.

Base

The base was quite important to my plan, I wanted the robot to be crashing through it a little bit as the big meany monster was stamping him. So I cut an uneven shape out of chipboard and added a load of filler - gradually building up the crater.

To finish the effect I added some styrene tiles, put in some rebar for detail and added some blast marks.

After a looonnng while things start to come together. I wanted to emphasise the 'motion' by having the monster attached to the base with pipes, suggesting that he's pulling at them as he escapes his captivity.

Finished figure

For the lighting, I thought it would be cool to have a blue flash of 'energy' run from the monsters leg to the base where it flickers... There's also a fading RGB led in the head of the robot.

Thanks for looking at my weird stuff.
